Tech Execs Laud Oracle software for Better Business Training reports Azuma Learning

The executives, who hailed from Scheels, Best Buy, Von Maur, Gander Mountain, and Logic Information Systems, joined the Governor on Friday at North Hennepin Community College to highlight the importance of teaching students Oracle Retail software.

Oracle Retail allows companies to track purchasing, shipping, inventory, and sales, as well as to make forecasts. While most larger companies use a similar type of software, Oracle’s program is the most popular, said the executives.

The problem is finding employees capable of operating Oracle Retail, they added.

“I actually could hire three people today if I could find people with a little experience,” said Armand Nelson, information systems director at Gander Mountain.

The jobs would pay a minimum of $80,000 per year, said several of the executives.

Amber Naqvi, Logic Information Systems president of retail and distribution, said he has offered to donate the expensive software to various community colleges as well as to train instructors to train students in its use.

Area education and company officials planned to meet to discuss the subject again next week.

It is not enough for prospective employees to know how to run the software, said Bruce Lindberg, executive director of Advance IT Minnesota. He noted that employees need to have an understanding of how a given company operates in order to know who information should be incorporated into the program. That is a set of skills that is challenging to quantify.

“You need to know something about how the business functions,” he said.

Minnesota counts the IT services industry among its faster growing economic sectors, according to the Governor’s office.

The state has historically been a leader in information technology. Last year, the industry employed more than 96,000 people and paid a total of more than $8.1 billion in wages in Minnesota.

IT services employment is expected to grow by 22 percent over the next eight years, with employees earning an average of $60,000 per year.

Overall, staying on top of link building techniques and being aware of the current methods that are both effective and ineffective is a great way to go. Although it definitely involves a lot of hard work, focusing on the correct way to go about building high quality links is extremely beneficial and worth the effort.

Fourie is managing director of MUA Insurance Acceptances. She says she has seen an increase in theft claims recently among athletes and gym users. She offers some advice.

Some athletes might leave their car keys in their vehicle while they take part in outdoor sport. In such cases, owners are not taking care of their vehicles and risk having a claim rejected if a vehicle is stolen, Fourie said.

“Some insurers even stipulate in the motor policy exclusions that theft cover of the vehicle is excluded if the ignition keys are left in or on the vehicle,” she said.

Smartphone are frequently stolen items, and they are particularly vulnerable when someone puts them down to take part in watersports. Fourie suggests waterproof cases to protect electronics.

Locker rooms also can be risky for those who are not taking proper care, she says.

“There has also been a noticeable increase in the number of claims received from gym users and other indoor sports participants who have left their valuables unattended in changing rooms while they are conducting their exercise or sport,” Fourie said, “and when they return they are shocked to discover the items are gone.”

She said it is safer to choose a locker in an area that gets high traffic, for example near the entrance or the showers, because thieves are likely to prefer isolated places.

“As an added security measure,” Fourie said, “place a lock on the gym bag within the locked locker or store items that are not necessarily needed – such as a laptop or iPad – in the boot of the locked motor vehicle.”

County Wants to Promote Gun Safety to Avoid Unwanted Incidents reports Safes Gallery

(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 14, 2012 ) Matthews, NC -- The Aiken County sheriff’s department and K9 division, along with ATF agents, are visiting schools all across the Aiken County area as part of Project Ceasefire. The endeavor is to help teach children about gun safety, bullying, and drug use.

The officers state it is an important opportunity to help kids learn about each of the possible dangers, including gun safety. Many of the children’s parents may own guns, and many of those parents may keep them at home.

On Wednesday, Jefferson Elementary students learned about what to do if they see a gun.

"Stay away from them and stop and tell an adult," said third grader Kaydin Mabrey.

"They told me if I ever see a gun in public, don't touch it," added second grader Starr Jordan.

It is all part of “Project Ceasefire”.

"Project Ceasefire is a two part," said Sgt. Selwyn DeLoach with the Aiken County Sheriff's Office. "Part of it is very aggressive criminal enforcement on firearm crimes. The second part of that is a lot of educational assets in the schools to try to teach the kids not to touch guns, not to succumb to bullying and not to allow that bullying to go into violence."

The Aiken County Sheriff’s office is attempting to work with the ATF in order to help stop violence before it ever has an opportunity to occur.

"Bullying is a major issue in schools and bullying leads to other issues with gun violence when the kids are either at school or when they leave school," said DeLoach. "Society now we really have to educate our kids that they have to make good choices because everything they do is gonna follow them."

The children watched the videos, and then answered questions, even getting to play with canine officer, Rick.

"They're most impressionable right now," said guidance counselor Erika Smith. "When they're older, I think sometimes they start to tune things out, but right now it's easy to get their attention and they look at law enforcement as sort of heroes to them right now and they look up to them a lot."

Unfortunately, the reality of children picking up guns they find and accidently shooting someone happens far too often.

"It does happen quite a bit throughout the United States and we're trying to do our part to make sure our kids stay safe and know to make good choices," DeLoach said. "Unfortunately, we do hear things like that and you have to make it a priority to talk about it with our kids," Smith said.

It is a reminder to kids that if there is a gun in their home, they need to stay away.

"So you don't accidentally pick it up and shoot someone," Mabrey said.

South African Diamond Dealer Faces Fraud Charges reports Safes Gallery

Giel Mans also is accused of trying to bribe a prosecutor and faking his own kidnapping, according to Forbes.com. Mans reportedly asked to be released so he could retrieve $10 million worth of diamonds to pay back the victims of his investment scheme.

A judge in Port Elizabeth denied bail. Magistrate Abigail Beaton made the decision after prosecutors said Mans would be a flight risk.

In 2005, Mans started to seek investors for his diamond business. He said he would resell diamonds abroad for a large markup and promised a handsome return. Mans was said to have supplied financial documents charting the steady growth of his investments.

Authorities said, however, that the documents had been falsified. Receipts for expensive diamonds also were said to be bogus.

Investors had entrusted Mans with almost $5 million.

After doubts about his business intensified, Mans fell victim to an apparent kidnapping while he was on a trip to buy diamonds. A text message to his wife demanded over $500,000 in ransom.

Investigators used Facebook to check out Mans’ connections, and they found him on Christmas Eve with friends.

Mans faces charges including fraud, obstruction of justice and theft of more than $1 million. He also is accused of offering a prosecutor $12,000 for his release.

At a bail hearing in October, Mans claimed he had $10 million in diamonds stashed in a London safety-deposit box. He offered to retrieve the jewels if he were freed on bail.

Mans’ claims were discounted by prosecutors, who pointed out that the suspect was accused of staging a fake kidnapping and offering a bribe.

“I can safely say there is no security box,” said Prosecutor Advocate Wilhelm de Villiers. “He must have (imagined it).”

Beaton ordered Mans held in custody until he goes to trial.

Suspicious Bullet "Locks Down" Bennington Middle School reports Locksmith San Antonio

(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 15, 2012 ) San Antonio, TX -- Mount Anthony Union Middle School’s 600 students were “locked down” Friday after a .22 caliber bullet was found in one of the school’s hallways. Police said that while there were no imminent threats of violence, the authorities were taking any and all precautions considering the horrible school shootings over the past decade.

While the school was locked down, worried parents waited outside with their hearts pounding in fear with no details of why police were there. When students were finally released, relief radiated throughout the grounds.

Parents were matched with their children until every student was accounted for. While students were being released, the principle Timothy Payne explained that the precautions were taken after a live .22-caliber cartridge was found in a hallway around lunch time.

Mr. Payne said that a lockdown was put into effect immediately after the discovery of the bullet at which time the Bennington Police as well as Catherine McClure, superintendent of the Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union, were alerted of the situation. Reports say that no other evidence was found after a thorough search of the school.

“We talked to the kids about (how) we had a concern about safety and that we had asked them to stay in place. We praised the kids and staff; we thought they did an excellent job,” Payne said.

The aftermath of the incident force officials to cancel an upcoming school dance, but that students would not be required to submit homework on Monday.

Most students were released to the school buses at the normal release time and were presented a note to take home to their parents describing the situation.

The students lockers are scheduled to be searched for more evidence, which meant a lot of students would have to spend the weekend without a cellphone or jacket. With this in mind, officials allowed students to recover necessary items like medications or house keys from their lockers under supervision.

Bennington Police Chief Paul Doucette explained that even though police and school staff would continue to search the school for evidence throughout Friday. the incident could be the result of hunting season and, “might be as innocent as the cartridge falling out of someone’s sweatshirt pocket.”

“But the bottom line is, this type of paraphernalia is not allowed in the school and it is very alarming and very concerning to the staff and the administration here,” he said.

McClure said the school’s response was, “excellent decision-making.”

“(It was) erring on the side of caution, really, but to ensure that the students were safe. I was very impressed when I arrived because everything was in order. The lockdown was done correctly, properly; you could have heard a pin drop,” she said.

Payne, McClure, and Doucette made clear their understanding of concerns by parents to get information about the situation out in a more timely fashion. Chief Doucette relayed that “students’ safety was first priority,” and McClure assured talks will resume about how to get information out quicker in the event of another incident.

“Their tablets are still extremely high quality and they generally offer discounts on their normal prices.”

Since Cyber Monday is so close to the holidays, many shoppers are looking for great deals on toys. So far, Phil and Eric said, the major toy retailers like Toys R Us and Wal-Mart are just offering “Toy Books” meant for Black Friday. This should not stop online shoppers for looking for deals, they said. Checking the retailers’ websites frequently may result in finding some great savings on this year’s most popular toys.

As for where to shop on Cyber Monday, Phil and Eric advise sticking with a few different stores. At the top of their list is Amazon.com, which offers free shipping on many of their products, a huge inventory, and an easy-to-navigate website. Wal-Mart.com is also a great online shopping choice, they said, with low prices and free shipping deals.

Veteran Photographer Captures 50 Years Of New York City Life reports Pro Tog

The winner of two Guggenheim Fellowships and awards from both the national arts and humanities endowments, Meyerowitz has published 19 books. However, the New York Daily News hails his just-released two-volume retrospective, Taking My Time, as the “definitive collection” of the images from his distinguished career. He says it took him three years to select its 580 images from the tens of thousands he has snapped.

His famed career began simply and unexpectedly. One day in 1962, while working as art director for an ad agency in Manhattan, he was assigned to travel to Stuyvesant Town to supervise a shoot by renowned street photographer Robert Frank. At day’s end, he so was impressed he went back to his office and quit his job, borrowing a camera to become a professional photographer. Along with Henri Cartier-Bresson and Eugène Atget, Frank would remain a major influence on his work.

Working four months a year in advertising so as to spend the rest of his time as a street photographer, Meyerowitz, like many other giants of the roamed the city, recording what he saw. He recalls daily walks along Fifth Avenue while capturing the people and places he encountered:

The self-taught cameraman started out taking 35mm black-and-white photos with a Leica, he soon won a reputation for portraits and landscapes, as well as for his street scenes. Then, in a dramatic change, Meyerowitz in 1972 decided to work exclusively in large format and color, when he said he found more expressive and revealing.

Teaching Cooper Union’s first class on color photography, he played a major role in winning greater artistic regard for color photography and became a major influence on many later artists working in color. His first book in 1979, Cape Light, drew critical raves as a model of expressive color photography.

In 2001, after the 9/11 attack, a group of New York detectives helped Meyerowitz gain complete access to Ground Zero, where he spent nine months documenting the tragedy. His gripping images toured the nation and were published as Aftermath: World Trade Center Archive in 2006, which won Germany’s Deutscher Fotobuchpreis photobook prize. The same year, he appeared extensively in the BBC Four documentary series, The Genius of Photography.

Despite having issued the new retrospective, Meyerowitz plans to keep active; his next project is a book with his wife, writer Maggie Barrett. They live in an Upper West Side apartment that also contains his studio.
