(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 08, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- Retail websites went offline for hours recently after a technical problem with Amazon.com Inc.’s hosting service.

Amazon Web Services had “degraded performance” in data storage units in northern Virginia, according to online postings reported by InternetRetailer.com. The affected area was Amazon’s U.S.-East 1 Region.

Its northern Virginia facility was hit by an outage in June.

One retailer said her site was down six hours. SimplySoles.com went offline from 1:30 to 7:30 p.m., according to owner Kassie Rempel.

“It did have a big impact yesterday,” Rempel said, although she declined to put a figure to sales lost to the outage. The company recently mailed catalogs that often lead to increased online sales.

SimplySoles ranks No. 823 in Internet Retailer’s Second 500 list.

In Amazon’s online forums, other operators echoed concerns about the problem.

Amazon said the issue affected a small number of Elastic Block Stores, which deal with data storage technology connecting Internet traffic to Amazon’s “cloud-based” services. Those services provide computing power that websites need to operate.

It was unknown how many sites went offline because of the problem or whether Amazon resolved it. The Internet retail giant was not available to comment.

One Internet retailer dropped Amazon cloud services after a 10-hour outage this summer. Ben Krishner, CoffeeServ Inc.’s CEO and founder, said the downtime caused his site to lose more than $25,000.

Krishner said that Amazon would reimburse him for only a small amount of the losses, which included content for the company’s retail site CoffeeforLess.com.

“We spent over $30,000 a year with them,” he told InternetRetailer.com.

Peer 1 Hosting now does the Web hosting for CoffeeforLess, which ranks No. 462 in Internet Retailer’s Top 500 list.

Amazon, which is No. 1 on the list, has seven customers in the Top 500; on the Second 500, it has six.

TMEIC’s North American operation designs, develops and engineers advanced automation, large AC machines and variable frequency drive systems. The company required an efficient way to get accurate inventory, shipping and receiving information into Oracle E-Business Suite by mobile workers inside the warehouse who were previously entering data manually. Moreover, to keep up with growing demand and increased production, TMEIC needed to either automate its business processes or hire more warehouse personnel. TMEIC selected Atlanta-based BarCode ID Systems as its solution provider for the project, who recommended RFgen Software for the Oracle EBS inventory application.

The solution, which also included enterprise printing, consulting and integration services by BarCode ID Systems, rugged mobile computers by Motorola Solutions and barcode printers by Zebra Technologies, was delivered under budget and ahead of schedule. According to Chris Eakin, Inventory/Warehouse Supervisor at TMEIC, "We found that the RFgen solution from BarCode ID Systems for Oracle E-Business Suite was the easiest to implement and will save us many hours of development and implementation time." Over the past year he has keynoted conferences in China, the Ukraine, Morocco and South Korea. In September, he delivered a talk on the global economic outlook to a conference sponsored by a private university in Morocco. He is slated to address a meeting of Arab bankers in Marrakech in November.

If he is able to establish himself as a sought-after speaker on the international conference circuit, which experts believe he has at least a fair chance of doing, DSK could bring in fees of $100,000 or more per talk.

For example, ex-U.S. President Bill Clinton, who left office in the midst of a sex scandal and an impeachment trial, now earns into the mid- to high-six figures for such speaking engagements.

Financial disclosure statements filed with the State Department by Hillary Clinton show her husband makes took in $750,000 for addressing a telecommunications industry gathering in Hong Kong, and made $500,000 for participating in an Abu Dhabi conference on environmental data.

In Paris, Strauss-Kahn has also filed papers with the commercial court as a preliminary step to start a consulting firm, known as Parnasse.
