Heating Crisis Intervention Program runs out of funds according to SurreyAirHeatingandCooling.com.au

The source explained that the high demands for air conditioning during the summer season have resulted in requests of nearly $10,000 each business day. DSS was given around $390,000 on July 9 by Federal Government to assist those living at a poverty level of 150 or less.

“I’m doubting we’ll have any allocation left for heating when it comes time, which is going to be bad news for our seniors that depend on this,” said Sandy Morrow, DSS child protective services supervisor. “(Seniors) are the least likely to come in and probably the ones that need it the most.”

The amount is believed to be spent on families who do not have a source of cooling. People who are in danger of their source being disconnected were also eligible for the funds, DSS has announced. As of August 15, Crisis Intervention has less than one third of the actual amount left for the winter season.

“From what they have said, that’s the best I know,” Morrow said. “We’ll spend (what we have now) until it’s exhausted and if we get another allocation, we’ll spend that till it’s exhausted.”

“If I’m living with my mother and I decide to move out on my own (and can’t pay bills), that’s not a crisis,” Morrow said.

It has not been determined yet if the CIP will receive more funds from the state to run its operations. Last year an amount totaling to nearly $900,000 was awarded with two multiple allocations. However, Morrow did not confirm if another allocation was available for CIP.

These funds will be spent on remodeling the centers’ current space, as well as improvements to software, equipment, furniture, and architectural plans.

Much of their previous funding was spent on mannequins that bleed, breathe, speak, and even give birth. These mannequins cost $100,000.00 each and are used to train OTC students. They include software that allows instructors to track the progress of their students on several different aspects of medical care.

Instructors will be able to monitor the force and rate of compressions being used in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Additionally, the mannequins’ software can be used to review the administration of medicines such as morphine. Errors in prescribing or administering medications are one of the most common mistakes in medicine, and this simulation teaches students the right way to administer powerful medicines.

OTC Chancellor Hal Higdon says that the simulation lab improvement is a ‘big deal’ and will put them where they want to be relative to their training program.

The main educational tools used during the last two years have been four lifelike adult mannequins. These mannequins perspire (sweat) and their chests even move when they breathe. There is also an infant mannequin as well as a female mannequin who can simulate the birth process.

The mannequins have been used in training nurses, emergency responders, and even dental hygienists.

The same 2000 square foot space in Lincoln Hall that has been used for the last two years will still be used. Once the remodeling of the Lincoln Hall space is completed (probably sometime in December 2012), students from 12 different fields will be trained using the mannequins. This new space is expected to be much more lifelike and much more stressful for the students, according to lab director Michelle Howard.

The planned remodel includes separating the space into individual rooms; this is quite a change from the current large open space that holds several employee desks. There will also be a paging system installed as part of the remodelling process.

The medical simulation rooms will include an emergency room, an intensive care unit, and a labor/delivery unit. There will also be a residential apartment simulation where emergency responders will be arriving without knowing exactly what to expect inside the unit.

Their purpose of making the training more stressful is that in real life medical emergencies can be very stressful. Most errors in healthcare happen because the people involved in the situation are stressed. They either don’t know exactly what to do, or the stress level causes them to forget important parts of their training.

The mannequin training will make the process more real for the students according to Howard. She also says that real-life situations are more successful in allowing students to remember the lessons.

There were three bids for the remodeling job, and the board approved the lowest bid. Bidders included several Springfield firms: Kornerstone Konstruction, Bales Construction Co, and Nabholtz Construction Services. Kornerstone won the contract with a bid of $246,840.00 while Bales bid $265,500.00 and Nabholtz came in at $276,222.00
